A lovely venue – Micklefield Hall, Herts

One of our favourite wedding venues is Micklefield Hall, nestled off the beaten track, but conveniently located near London and the rest of the world in Hertfordshire. A family home that opens itself to weddings and other events, we have been a regular photographer for quite a few years. We recently popped in to say hello and thought we’d show off the spectacular gardens…

A sneak preview of our Jersey Wedding…

We couldn’t wait to post the photographs from our wedding at the weekend. Although not all are quite ready, here is a taste of a very special day.
The wedding took place at the stunning Jersey venue, Longueville Manor. Gemma, our bride, was inspired by vintage Portuguese lace for her day and chose the talented London based stylists Grace & Tailor to help create the day. Enjoy these photographs and a full post with details and photographs will follow shortly.

Inspirations – Spring colour scheme, flowers and favours

Our previous blog was about Victoria and Ben’s wedding in Hertfordshire. The details and colours that made up their wedding were so beautiful that we thought they deserved to be showcased in a separate piece.

They chose to use colours of silver and white with a dash of aubergine. This was worked beautifully throughout: in the flowers, decorations and accessories, with the aubergine colour appearing in subtle ways. The top table had aubergine chiffon around their chairs whilst the rest of the chairs in the marquee had silver chiffon. Little bridesmaids complimented their ivory dresses with the same aubergine chiffon tied as a waistband. Even the cake had a slight colouring of aubergine on the fondant petals.

Andrew Fleming was the florist and he produced beautiful bouquets and amazing table centre pieces, as well as decorating the church with his wonderful displays. Again aubergine effectively featured throughout. Tall, silver candelabras were stunning when lit, giving the marquee such a warm glow.

Other lovely touches were the white grand piano, being played throughout the meal; the white dancefloor with sparkly lights; and decorative trees which surrounded the dancefloor with blue fairy lights.

Finally, we have to comment on the favours, as they were so very clever. Each guest had been bought a lottery ticket! Let’s hope someone went home richer that night.

Victoria & Ben Brocklesby, Micklefield Hall, Hertfordshire

Victoria and Ben were married on May 1st at Christ Church, Chorleywood. Their reception was held at one of our favourite venues, Micklefield Hall in Hertfordshire. The bride looked stunning in dress made for her by her Godmother and the colour scheme for the day was predominantly silver and white with a dash of aubergine, simple but very stylish. The weather had been predicted rain but it held out until just after everyone was inside the marquee – perfect timing!

The wedding was kept on schedule by the toastmaster, Vanessa King, and the moving images of the day were filmed by the lovely Damo at Reel60. If you want to see more of the images from the day, please take a look at our Flickr page.

An interesting way to print your photos

Pearl Pictures was recently made aware of a really unique and fun way to showcase your wedding photos. A company called Newspaper Club, www.newspaperclub.co.uk, offer to print anything you like as a newspaper. Their bespoke service is a great way to print a selection of your photos.

We thought this was wonderful alternative to the traditional thank you card. You could print an 8 page newspaper and send to all your guests!

Easter skiing in Switzerland!

While the Pearl girls took themselves off for a spot of sunshine and skiing in the beautiful Swiss Alps over Easter, they marvelled at what a place this is for romance! Whether winter or summer, the Swiss Alps are truly breathtaking. We stayed in the picturesque village of Wengen, in the Jungfrau Region of Switzerland. Around here there are some wonderful places to get married or spend your honeymoon.

You could get married at the “Shilthorn” – the famous James Bond 007 location from “On her Majesty’s Secret Service”, which sits on a summit and has breathtaking 360 degree views over the snow covered mountains.

You could honeymoon by taking the famous train ride to the Jungfraujoch mountain – named the “top of Europe” – and then stop en-route back down to stay on the mountain surrounded by stunning landscape at the cosy Hotel Bellevue in Kleine Scheidegg, (http:www.scheidegg-hotels.ch). Or, if you fancy being in the hustle and bustle a little bit more (but not too much) you could stay further down the mountain in Wengen, a charming, picture postcard, car free village where we recommend the Hotel Regina (http:www.hotelregina.ch) for traditional alpine luxury.

Finally, if you fancy something more modern in style and design, we suggest staying nearby in Adelboden at The Cambrian. Listed with Mr & Mrs Smith hotel directory (http://www.mrandmrssmith.com) this hotel would make the perfect honeymoon stop, whether you want the winter thrill snow action, the summer serenity for walks, or simply to enjoy the spa while taking in the views!

Here are some photos of the areas described to wet your appetite and have you dreaming of a holiday if nothing else. Now, back to work … a busy summer of weddings at the ready… and where are those swiss chocolates?! ….

A unique boutique wedding planner..

Savoir Weddings organise boutique weddings for contemporary couples.

Run by Josie and Dan – oh yes grooms-to-be, you can have your very own male planner – Savoir Weddings work with couples who want to do something a little bit different and step away from tradition. “We felt there were many companies catering for more conventional weddings but we wanted to offer something for those who wanted to do things differently” says Josie. In particular, Savoir specialise in planning festival style weddings (both Josie and Dan have a background in music events), green/eco friendly weddings, home receptions and weddings abroad.

Savoir Weddings can come in to help couples at all stages of the planning process. They offer a variety of services from sourcing creative and unique wedding suppliers to consultancy in a particular area, to full planning. “We like to think we make the planning process and day as smooth, relaxed and stress free as possible for all our brides and grooms and help them have a wedding they didn’t even know was possible!” concludes Josie.

Pearls of wisdom – how to get the most out of your wedding photographer

Once you have the venue and catering sorted, you’ve chosen your dress and florist, your thoughts should turn to finding your wedding photographer. Pearl have put together a few words of advice to help you get the most out of your wedding day photography.

1. Don’t assume that wedding photography is an easy job that uncle Bob can do with his new camera

Although your wedding costs are rising, do you really want to ask a guest to take your photos? Aside from giving them an immense amount of responsibility and pressure, you might also find (quite rightly) that they don’t have their eye on the job – they are a guest after all. If a friend or family member does a terrible job, you can’t re-shoot the day and your relationship with them may never be the same again.

Could a guest capture such a lovely moment?

Could a guest capture such a lovely moment?

2. The photographs will be with you forever

Other than your own memory (and we all know that fades with time!), once the day is over, the wedding photographs will be the main way you can look back and re-live your special day. Think of your grandchildren and how great it will be to show them the album where they can see you looking so young and in love!

As for the cost of your photography package, we have it on good knowledge that wedding planners advise their couples to spend approximately 10% of their total wedding day costs on the photography.

3. Trust your wedding photographer

They do know what they are doing! They have a lot of experience of wedding days and can be a great source of advice and calm when the nerves start to kick in. Their experience means they will be one step ahead of the proceedings, and therefore will be in the right place at the right time, never missing an important shot.

A good photographer will always be in the right place at the right time

4. Have a discussion with your photographer before the day

Your photographer should call you before the day to discuss the finer details of your photography requirements and the day’s proceedings. It is important that you mention the key people of the day, e.g. a cousin has flown in from Australia just for the weekend, or maybe your mum or friend has made the cake, what is the after dinner entertainment, is it a friend’s band, etc. All these details are very important for the photographer to know. They will ask you all the right questions but it is handy to have thought about this beforehand.

Very special guests

5. Think about what products you would like with your wedding photography package

A cd of images, an album, an online gallery? At Pearl we offer different CD’s and DVD’s with different packages. Think about how you would like to use the images on the disc, i.e. just for emailing friends, for doing small prints, or for making your own album. This will dictate which resolution you would have the images on your disc. Albums are a more considered option as the good ones are not cheap, but remember, you want these albums to last forever, so don’t skrimp on the quality.

A Christmas Wedding, London

Sasha and Christopher Morphitis were so lucky with the weather for their Christmas wedding – it snowed! They were married in Camden Registry Office, witnessed by their families, and then went on to enjoy an entertainment-filled evening at the Old Crown in Highgate, North London. Here they were joined by all their friends. After the speeches, the bride took centre stage and sang for her new husband. She was followed by her husband, Christopher, who entertained the guests with a musician friend with wonderful cultural music.

Wedding in Lavenham, Suffolk

Ben and Holly recently married at the picturesque tudor hotel, The Swan, in Lavenham, Suffolk. A December wedding brought with it a Christmas theme, and the couple brought sparkle to the occasion with clever details, flowers and colours. All that was missing was snow to complete the Christmas fairytale theme!
